STEM Institute for Empirical Research was founded in 1990 by Jan Hartl. The organization grew out of the efforts of a few enthusiasts who created the first multitrack survey network for continuous monitoring of attitudes in (then) Czechoslovak society. STEM carried out the first public opinion survey of the Czechoslovak population in March 1993.

Jan Hartl was head of STEM until 2015. Between 2003 and 2015, Petr Václavík helped him with management in the role of executive director. From 2015 to 2018, STEM was headed by Pavel Fischer. Martin Buchtík has been the director of STEM since 2018.

In the early 1990s, STEM focused primarily on international academic projects. In May 1993, the in-house TRENDS project commenced, a regular monthly survey that continuously monitors the dynamics of social changes in the Czech Republic to this day.

In 1994, STEM/MARK, a sister joint-stock company, was established to focus on consumer behavior and market research.

In 2015, STEM changed its legal form to a Registered Institute and operates as an independent and non-profit research institution whose mission is to provide data-based advice to public and civil institutions and to strengthen democratic debate in the Czech Republic. In more than three decades of its existence, STEM has conducted more than 1,000 sociological surveys, in which it interviewed more than a million residents of the Czech Republic

We focus on a broad range of quantitative and qualitative sociological research methods, data cleaning and analysis, and secondary analyzes of various sources, data-based consultancy, and creation of communication strategies.

We do not carry out just data collection itself as we are an analytical organization with a focus on data analysis, their interpretation, and the formulation of recommendations. We partner with trusted data-collecting organizations in the Czech Republic to collect high-quality survey data for our research.

For quantitative surveys, we offer a combination of personal interviewing (CAPI) and online panel interviewing (CAWI), or just online panel interviewing. It depends on the topic and objectives of the research. For shorter surveys, we can also arrange telephone interviews (CATI). In general, it is possible to carry out both a larger monothematic research with us and to add only a few questions to another survey in the form of an omnibus (survey with several thematic modules), most often in the longitudinal TRENDS series.

In terms of qualitative research, we routinely conduct in-depth and semi-structured interviews, focus groups, expert interviews, discussion triads, and qualitative diaries (often with follow-up group interviews).

STEM analysts also provide statistical processing, segmentation, modeling, and interpretation of existing sociological and economic data. These can be obtained from public sources, from STEM archives, or from a private or public contractor. Secondary analysis and processing of data from the STEM archive offers a unique comparison of developments and trends from the early 1990s to the present.

STEM experts also participated and currently participate as advisors in national political decisions (e.g. referendum on joining the EU), public benefit campaigns (changes in laws and monitoring the effects of these changes), civil society activities, in public administration advisory bodies.
